1. One theorist who has discussed gender representation which i have looked at thus far would be Vladimir Propp the Russian theorist who discussed different character archetypes. his idea of one type of Female archetype would be the "Damsel in distress" and one male one would be the "hero".
Learning Outcomes
to understand how representation is used in the Revenent
Representation relates to how the media shows an audience (us) things about society including the differences between different kinds of people (ages, ethnicity and gender)
The Reinvents plot.
After being wounded on a trek with his fellow solders to get back to their base camp after an attack from an indigenous tribe occupying the setting, Hugh Glass (the protagonist) is critically injured by a bear. He is then nearly killed by his friend John Fitzgerald who also kills his son. Glass has to survive in the wilderness and hunt down Fitzgerald.
Tim O'Sullivan et al. (1998)
for representation to be achieved in fairness all groups of people must be shown equally therefore all representation has an ideology behind it.
The Revinent shows the indigenous tribes of the area as intelligent and able fighters which is quite a positive ideology however it is the American men which are represented as quite cruel and uncaring which is a very negative one and is used to highlight the flawed system that has left Hugh Glass in the situation which he finds himself in. This view of the early days on north american colonialisation goes directly againt dominant idealoligys of the time.
Richard Dyer (1983)
Audiances should question the reprisentations which are shown in media texts.
I agree with this sentiment as that it is clear that media reprisentation of people in fictonal texts cannot always be accurate.
